Perspective
January / February 2010
Fiona Wain, CEO
It is easy to say "Copenhagen failed, governments need to do better" and certainly CoP15 did not provide the outcomes we (and many others) had hoped for. However, the members of EBA's business delegation did get access to some of the world's key decision makers to discuss their 'plan for action' and the reception was very enthusiastic because of the "we can get on and do it now" approach.
While EBA has been a staunch supporter of emissions trading and a carbon price set by the market, we must not allow the stalling of the CPRS to impede the technology, infrastructure and land management action that will deliver immediate abatement/mitigation with or without a CPRS.
That is why EBA's theme for this year is 'New markets, new industries, new jobs'. We are looking forward to helping our members develop some really major long-term and far-reaching projects and we will be showcasing some of this work at a major conference and incubator event that is tentatively scheduled for July.
EBA Forum
Dr Ken Henry AC, Secretary to The Treasury, will speak on the The Value of the Environment to EBA members on Thursday 4 March. He will elaborate on the discussion of sustainability, wellbeing and the environment in the Government’s 2010 Intergenerational Report ‘Australia to 2050: Future challenges’. The environment is of value for current and future generations, both in itself and as an input to production.
EBA is taking registrations of interest in attending this event from members. The forum will be run under Chatham House rules and will be closed to media.
Following Dr Henry's address and Q&A session there will be a separate session to develop the work EBA is doing on 'New markets, new industries, new jobs' . A registration request form is available by contacting Valerie Orton at EBA.

EBA news
On 2 February, EBA hosted a Forum with Peter Young, Strategy Director, Enviros, and supported by Sinclair Knight Merz. The Forum, including a discussion panel with Guy Williams from SKM and Jim Longley from Commonwealth Bank, focused on a report by the UK based Aldersgate Group, that argued for more radical approach to financing low carbon projects to ensure carbon targets are met.
